urbanNOISE & Literacy Through Hip Hop Contest

LTHH is offering dynamic workshops for the students of Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic School. Literacy Through Hip Hop is an innovative literacy program which uses the popular youth culture of hip hop, specifically hip hop music, as a means to engage youth about their reading and writing. Their aim is to improve the literacy skills of youth by connecting it with something that many young people are interested in and excited about.

At the end of these sessions, participants will then get a chance to present their work to a live jury and for a chance to win a spot in the 5th annual urbanNOISE Festival!!!

Interviews with be held Monday June 21 & Tuesday 22, 2010!

We will be hiring 8 dynamic youth from Rexdale this Summer to work on our 5th annual urbanNOISE Festival!

urbanNOISE MOVIE WORKSHOP!

Train with award winning director  Joel Gordon & learn how to write, act and shoot a movie!

A co-production of Expect Theatre and Arts Etobicoke, the urbanNOISE Movie Project is an exciting initiative where youth will get the chance to create a short film reflecting the challenges that they face in their community. Participants will be guided through all aspects of movie making, such as script writing, directing, editing and filming!

MOVIE PROJECT

Instructor: Joel Gordon

A co-production between Arts Etobicoke and Expect Theatre, the urbanNOISE Movie Project is a three-year initiative that will involve a selected group of youth to create a series of dramatic scenarios that reflect typical youth crimes in the Rexdale and Jamestown area. Participants will be guided through various exercises that will help them create alternate endings to each storyline. Their goal will be to develop different ways to resolve and diffuse a conflict before it leads to violence. This short movie will be written, directed, videotaped and performed by the youth themselves! Participants will then be trained as youth ambassadors who will travel to high-risk neighbourhoods in the GTA sharing what they learned at different schools and community programs.

Instructors: d’bi young, Dwayne Morgan, Rose Kazi and Nicholas Murray

In these workshops, participants will get a chance to train with artists d’bi young (anitAFRIKA Dub Theatre), Dwayne Morgan (Up From the Roots) and founding members Rose Kazi and Nicholas Murray from the beats sensation LAL. Students will learn to combine elements of theatre, spoken word and music to produce a final presentation to be performed for their community at the end of April.
